Everything you need to know about a hiking proposal
Should you involve friends to your proposal surprise?
Do You Really Need a Ring for the Proposal?
Why are Hiking Proposals more than a beautiful photos?
I would plan the hike in a way that there is a certain spot where you can propose. Avoid the most famous hikes because you don't want to pop the question in front of a bunch of other people.
You can check if someone else have made a course in All Trails you could use and if there are potential location where you can see a mountain or a lake background. I think a lake in the background is a super memorable option, and it's been studied that we feel relaxed near the sea or a lake. There are multiple locations in Norway where you could have both, a lake and a mountain as a background. As an example, I photographed this proposal in Blåisvatnet, or Blåvatnet in Norway and it was a stunning place for an intimate proposal.
If you're planning to to your hike in the mountains, it's good to have a backup plan if the weather changes. I always make a backup plan if it's raining for the whole day or if the location happens to be very crowded.
You’ve got the ring (or not yet), the time, and the place—but how do you plan the perfect location? Google Earth Pro and Sun Seeker apps are your new best friends.
Google Earth Pro allows you to scout locations virtually, checking out trails, viewpoints, and how the light hits different areas throughout the day. This tool is especially useful if you're planning from afar or want to find a hidden gem that’s off the beaten path.
Sun Seeker app is when you are able to visit the proposal spot earlier. You can then see the sun virtually even though it would be a different time of the day or year. I use it very often on location to check how the light changes during the day so I can be sure that it looks super good when I'm going to photograph a proposal.
Doing things for the experience
A hiking proposal naturally lends itself to some epic engagement photos, but consider doing the actual photo session on a different day.
This way, you can focus on the moment without worrying about your hair getting windblown or your clothes getting muddy.
Plus, having the session later gives you a chance to pick the perfect conditions and location.

Hey, I'm Jaakko!
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re thinking about one of the most meaningful moments of your life. And if you’re feeling excited, nervous, and a little unsure all at once, that’s completely normal.
I’ve proposed too. I remember how much I wanted everything to feel right, without making it feel staged or forced. That experience is a big part of why I do this work the way I do.
When I help plan and photograph proposals in Norway, my role isn’t just to take photos. It’s to think ahead, read conditions, build backup plans, and quietly carry the responsibility so you don’t have to. Weather, light, timing, privacy, access. All the things that matter, especially in the mountains and in winter.
I spend a lot of time scouting locations and understanding how these landscapes behave in different seasons, so the moment can feel calm, natural, and truly yours.
