I've been an elopement photographer for a decade now, and I proposed to my girlfriend, now wife, in a way that was photographed by a photographer. Honestly, I love those proposal images so much, probably even more than my wedding photos, because they are so real, and it was such an exciting time in our lives. After that, we did an engagement session, and it was super cool, because we were over the moon, especially my girlfriend, who was the target of that surprise!
After proposing to my girlfriend at the time, I've had the opportunity to capture multiple proposals, and they all have a place in my heart. I've had adventurous couples who wanted to hike to a secluded mountain, but I've also had couples who asked the big question not too far from their car.
And if you're wondering, does it matter who is proposing whom, it really doesn't! This is obvious if you're planning a same sex proposal but no matter your sex, getting on one knee is just a testament to how much you want to commit to each other! And actually, I photographed a same sex couple last year who proposed simultaneously! They had both decided to propose on a hike, and it was the most personal and memorable moment I can think of!

Proposing in nature is more than just a beautiful backdrop—it's about experiencing the moment in a way that you're fully present. Imagine standing in a secluded spot on a mountaintop or next to a quiet lake at the great outdoors. If you love to hike, proposing on a hiking adventure is going to be so cool and exciting. I mean it's a story to tell to future generations!

Do You Really Need a Ring for the Proposal?
Let’s be honest—the idea of having a ring is romantic, but the real essence of a proposal is the promise you’re making. I didn't have ring when I proposed and my wife didn't mind that, but it might be also due to Scandinavian culture where people aren't that materialistic. I know that some have also made their own ring using things they find from nature and then they've bought a ring together. So if you know your spouse, don't overthink it! Just plan the proposal and do the hike, it's going to be sweet and intimate without the ring, too!
If you do have a ring, figuring out where to stash it during the hike can be a bit of a challenge. You could tuck it into a secure pocket, but just be sure it’s zipped up tight! And if you’re planning to propose at the summit, don’t forget to take it out of your pack before you reach the top—you wouldn’t want to fumble around at the big moment!

Should you involve friends to your proposal surprise?
I think you should definitely involve friends if you feel like it! I'm sure they would love to be a part of your love story. They could help you choose what to wear, what kind of ring to choose and where to hide your ring box. However, I wouldn't probaly take them with you to your hike, because there's a risk that your private moment wouldn't be that private anymore.

What’s the Best Perfect time to have a Hiking Proposal?
Listen. I know engagement is a big deal. In fact, choosing your partner is one of the biggest decisions of your live. But if you're seen enough, you have noticed how fragile life can be. Time is the most precious thing we have. If you're sure you're going to propose to your partner, there's isn't better time than now. You don't need the perfect proposal, you don't need the perfect time of the year, you just need to be present.
But let's still talk about the time of the year a bit. Whether you want the lush greens of summer, the golden hues of autumn, or the crisp whites of winter, each season offers a unique atmosphere. Just remember, the best time for your proposal also depends on the trail conditions and your comfort with the weather.

When’s the Best Time of Day for a Proposal?
When time should you propose?
If you're going to do a hike and propose in nature, I would plan the timing accordingly. When sun is lower, the atmosphere changes and it affects our mood. Early morning sunrise proposals offer the tranquility of having the trail to yourselves and that soft, golden light that makes everything look magical.
On the other hand, sunset proposals give you the drama of the day’s last light. And if you're planning to visit Northern Norway in summer, you can even hike in the night, because it's not going to be dark at all! It's like having a constant sunrise or sunrise for several hours!
The first time I experienced nightless night in Norway I was so excited! Just keep in mind that depending on the time of year, daylight hours can be pretty short in fall and winter, so plan accordingly! If you're unsure you could check the length of the day from this website.

Capturing the moment is important, but do you really need a photographer? Obviously, I'm biased to say (as I'm in the picture and writing this), but I believe that finding the right proposal photographer can actually make your surprise proposal so much better! Sure, reliving the moments again is lovely, and yeah, you probably want to show your adventure to your friends and family, but I believe the right photographer will elevate your experience to another level.
In general, if you want to relive the moment and show off your adventure to friends and family, it’s a good idea. If you decide to go for it, meeting the photographer before the proposal can help you feel more comfortable and ensure they know exactly what you’re looking for. For example, I once met a guy who was going to propose over a beer to finalize our plan. We had talked over a video call earlier, but it was nice to quickly meet before the proposal.
Some prefer the photographer to be hidden away, capturing the surprise, while others might want them 'bump into you' along the trail or at the proposal spot. For example, I could easily pretend I'm there just to photograph a landscape. Okay, this is the hard part, but also the exciting one! Here are some tips to make it special. If you're proposing without a photographer, you could say let's take a picture in this spot and instead of a photo, hit the video recording and pop the question! You could say a few personal words, tell your spouse why you want to marry and get on left knee!
How to actually pop the question and propose?
This could happen in front of a beautiful beach, secluded mountain, or some other location your partner would find memorable. Or you could go for a picnic on a beach and hide some champagne in your backpack.
Try to find a background that is simple enough, but interesting. If you're using a mobile phone for capturing, I would either backlight or front light the proposal so your photos or video looks the best. Side light is usually not the best option for photos, so I would try to avoid it, especially if it's not yet sunset and it's bright outside.
Usually I take a video for the couple too, and I'm using Peak Design everyday case and Mobile creator kit for my iPhone and then a Gorilla Pod 5k as a tripod where I attach the Mobile creator kit. There are cheaper options available too, try searching for "a tripod for phone". Remember to take some images before that so it won't be too obvious!

How to find the perfect spot to propose on a hike?
I would plan the hike in a way that there is a certain spot where you can propose. Avoid the most famous hikes because you don't want to pop the question in front of a bunch of other people.
You can check if someone else have made a course in All Trails you could use and if there are potential location where you can see a mountain or a lake background. I think a lake in the background is a super memorable option, and it's been studied that we feel relaxed near the sea or a lake. There are multiple locations in Norway where you could have both, a lake and a mountain as a background. As an example, I photographed this proposal in Blåisvatnet, or Blåvatnet in Norway and it was a stunning place for an intimate proposal.
If you're planning to to your hike in the mountains, it's good to have a backup plan if the weather changes. I always make a backup plan if it's raining for the whole day or if the location happens to be very crowded.
Planning Your Proposal Using Google Earth Pro and Sun Seeker
You’ve got the ring (or not yet), the time, and the place—but how do you plan the perfect location? Google Earth Pro and Sun Seeker apps are your new best friends.
Google Earth Pro allows you to scout locations virtually, checking out trails, viewpoints, and how the light hits different areas throughout the day. This tool is especially useful if you're planning from afar or want to find a hidden gem that’s off the beaten path.
Sun Seeker app is when you are able to visit the proposal spot earlier. You can then see the sun virtually even though it would be a different time of the day or year. I use it very often on location to check how the light changes during the day so I can be sure that it looks super good when I'm going to photograph a proposal.
What if There's No Cell Service Connection?
Norway’s wilderness is stunning, but it’s also remote. Chances are, you might lose cell service along the way. Don’t let this stress you out—plan ahead by sharing your route with someone you trust and downloading offline maps.
I recommend using All Trails, Komoot, Norgeskart and Ut.no-apps, but I also recommend to have a physical map, especially if the mountains. Personally, I also use a Garmin Epix Pro, which has offline maps and when going remote, I also use Garmin inReach device, if something goes wrong and I or my couples need help.
And remember, if your photographer is tagging along, make sure you have a plan to find each other without relying on texts or calls.

What to Wear for Your Hiking Proposal in Norway
The weather in Norway can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is essential. You want to look good for the big moment, but staying warm and dry should be your top priority. Think practical, but don’t be afraid to throw in a touch of style—after all, you're going to be looking these images for the rest of your life. For Norway, I recommend wearing merino wool layers, wool sweaters, a pair of good looking hiking pants and hiking boots that you like. For outer layer, bring a down jacket and a rain jacket.
I usually wear Grunten winter boots in winter but if it's icy, I add my Winter spikes that can be attached to almost any shoe. To give you some inspiration, brands like Danner, Hanwag, and Red Wings (in the picture) are great, but me mindful with the outsoles, because for example, I’ve changed my outsoles for my Red Wings purely for better traction. I absolutely loved them earlier, but they just were too slippery.
If you're going to be hiking near the coast, you don't need a bug spray, but inland it might be useful during the summer months. If you want to camp for the night, you could bring some fairy lights, but make sure they are bright enough because most led lights are too dim to really light you and the area you're camping.
